Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Nigeria, the Government of Nigeria (GoN) issued FCT lockdown order under the Quarantine Act as a measure to curb the spread of the virus.
This led to the establishment of mobile courts headed by 12 magistrates in 13 locations across the FCT where individuals who were caught violating the Quarantine Act could be arraigned. Due to reports of excessive lockdown enforcement and concerns with defendants’ access to a fair trial, NULAI partnered with the NBA Abuja Branch to provide pro bono legal representation to violators of the lockdown order arraigned before the mobile courts.
